I'm working on a scarf for a family member, and I couldn't find a cord for my circular needles that wasn't already being used by another project. So I'm knitting this on straight needles, and it's been ages since I've used straight needles.

I also had to bump the needle size up, and I hope I cast on the right number of stitches, because I swear this scarf looks wider than five inches. I've only knit two rows, though, so maybe the ribbing will help it take form somewhat...?

The ribbing will tend to contract as it gets further down below the needles. You don't get an accurate idea of width while the stitches are still being held rigid on straight needles, which is why you need to work several inches on a tension square before you can be certain.
