What Makes an Erotic Book Cover

Mori: After the end of my real-life bar graphing bacchanalia (lying on the floor, surrounded by books with tits and ass on the cover), I found myself having one of those 1AM conversations with my headmates: what makes a book cover truly EROTIQUE? What is that je nais se quoi and other fancy French words that give it the oomph?

this is the horny comic book equivalent of a bunch of wine aficionados talking in snooty Boston accents about the fine details of their stale grape juice and how great it is. )

Mori: man, what a crummy brain day.

Brain: x_x what will you do to nourish me?

Mori: organize magazines at the sci-fi library, of course! What could be more soul-nurturing than that?!

Brain: you’re right, absolutely nothing!

Mori: man, I can’t help but notice how racy these chainmail bikini babes are and how they’re all over the place, even in nonporny things, while the actual porn we buy these days is way, way tamer in their cover art. These old geeks get to have jiggling nipples everywhere while Rogan can barely buy gay porn comics with a shirtless guy on the cover.

Brain: Hmm... could we make a soul-nurturing activity out of this??? @_@

Mori: I want to go through our entire bookshelf for all the nudity and horny covers and then arrange them into real-life bar graphs charting them by year, content, and couplings.

Brain: HUZZAH! That’s the way to use me! I feel better already!

(And then we made photo graphs and photographs.)

I stumbled across the Italian comedy film "Moschettieri del re" by accident (in its Russian dub, under the YouTube title "4 Musketeers are miserable leading a boring peaceful life") and actually enjoyed it a good deal; as a piece of cinema I think this is more successful than the Russian "Return of the Musketeers", and in a not dissimilar vein, being set at about the same period of history and painted with an equally broad brush in terms of fantastic improbability. The fact that as a native English-speaker I was watching it in Russian obviously means that I was missing out on any finer points in the script and wasn't in a position to judge the quality or delivery of the original Italian dialogue in any case, but I thought it worked.

This film doesn't really have a plot -- beyond the opening gambit of "The Musketeers reunite thirty years later" -- but there is a reason for that. Meanwhile it's a series of episodic adventures towards an unknown end, in the spirit of an ongoing serial or soap opera. It has a decent Athos, which is always a selling-point so far as I am concerned, even if he does have a face like Toby Jones :-p The characters are well-defined and remain consistent to the updated versions of themselves that have been established, and I particularly liked the direction in which the older Aramis was developed here. I didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I did, and even if it wasn't 'real' Russian it was still good practice!

And I was able to understand large chunks of it on first hearing )

Up front: I’m fine, everything is ok. I went to the ER last night. I had sudden excruciating abdominal pain that caused muscle spasms that made it feel like my ribs were going to snap. Nothing showed up on a CT and X-ray, so they gave me a bunch of meds for acid and other stomach issues.

Because of all this, I learned that morphine doesn’t really do anything for me, and I am big mad about that. Especially because last night was the first time I described my pain level as a 10. Even with my ridiculously high pain tolerance, I was writhing in pain and wanted to be knocked out.

I’M FINE. We have no idea what caused this, but I’m fine.

I'm getting into Very Strange Territory in some of my reading at the moment, and sometimes my interpretations of what I'm reading are going a bit sideways*. To whit, I read the following two sentences:

Children have different developmental needs depending on their age and personality. One-year-olds eat more books than they read, which is why the sturdy board book material is so important.

and my first thought was "because they need more fibre in their diet?"

*I have until Thursday--by which I am interpreting that to mean Very Early Friday, because the supervisor said they will read it Friday--to write a page of methodology, and exactly what methodology (not methods, I have Ideas for that) is going to be applied to the children's books section of the project is giving me grief. I would very much like to have a paragraph on my methodology and why I think it is useful by bedtime tonight, and not have bedtime be after 11pm.

Bob: my birthday’s in two weeks, and Rogan asked what I wanted. My response? All the food I am not allowed to eat in my old, bad-heart body. Fried food, desserts, fat and sweets and flavors.

Today, he was at the ice cream shop, and one of the specials was Xtabentun coffee ice cream with anise/honey liqueur. Coffee and booze: my favorite combination! (And wasted on these kids; Falcon is the only one in this place who appreciates a decent cup of coffee asides from me.)

I staked my birthday claim early. I got my ice cream. Oh, it was an experience to be savored, for sure! Best ice cream I’ve ever had... and their body can take it no problem.

Happy early birthday to me!

I made the listing of AllFam invisible except to me and previous buyers. The takedown notice is still publicly accessible, but at least it won't be scaring off any potential customers. (And I've now finally accepted the inevitable and created the "pedojacket" tag so I can have an easy way to track shit like this happening to me.)

In better news, we're going to be a part of the Somerville YART Sale event with Joshua Porterfield! We'll have a table of art, zines, books, and FORBIDDEN OBJECTS in front of 68 Bonair At., Somerville, MA 02145.

Event Date: Saturday, August 9th, 12–6 PM (weather date Sunday, August 10th)
Event Map:   https://somervilleartscouncil.org/yart-sale/yart/ (check out more people selling art as yard sales!)
More info anytime at: www.somervilleartscouncil.org/yart-sale

I have also updated my Events Page, which I just realized a lot of people may not know the existence of. (Didn't help that I myself neglected it a lot during the early years of COVID.)

[personal profile] kalloway posted a book report / media roundup, which made me realise that I haven't done one of these in a while. The most recent I can find is from early April, which means I have four months worth of reading to annotate. *sigh*. I wish I remembered these things more frequently. This is only going to be longer works; short stories have been somewhat captured elsewhere. This is approximately in order april to august, but little attempt has been made to create an exact timeline.

I'm a little bemused to discover that I've finished 20 books in four months, even if some of them were carried over from previous and two were for uni.

four months means a lot of notes )

I pricked out some of my rocket -- which has just about recovered from the caterpillar, though I found another caterpillar this morning on one of my newly-pricked-out pots of kale -- and coriander, which was getting very crowded even though I have been thinning it for culinary use. I have to say there wasn't a lot of root on the seedlings that I did remove...

I saw a ladybird this afternoon, and hope that it might show some interest in the blackfly, but even if it does produce larvae that will be far too little, too late. I strongly suspect the ants of 'farming' the blackfly on purpose :-(

Why warn against Mordaunt?

I had vaguely assumed that Athos and Aramis, having arrived in England at the tail-end of the Civil War, had served for several months in the King's army before the final surrender. But in fact the King describes them on that last morning as deux amis de huit jours que je n’oublierai jamais; apparently they have been in England for only about a week (in which case, to be honest, it is very surprising that he places such trust in them -- and astonishing that Aramis, who speaks English but unlike Athos has not lived there, is able to understand what is said to be the Lowland dialect of the sentry with whom he converses :-p)

The letter that Athos sends to d'Artagnan to say that they are in a very bad situation (and that his friend should assume that he is dead if no further word is heard for a space of two and a half months) must therefore have been written almost immediately when they arrived in England, which seems an improbably swift descent into despair; Read more... ) It cannot surely be merely because Mordaunt shouted "See you in England" after their boat as it rowed away?

I just saw what I assume is a Star Trek promotional image for one of the many shows that are around at the moment. I don't recognise any of the actors, and I'm choosing to not go down the relevant rabbit hole.

The important bit, is I saw said image, with people in yellow, red, and blue skivvies, and thought "I don't recognise any of those Wiggles".

Farewell: Greg Hastings

Back channel, I hear that local folk musician Greg Hastings has passed away. I gather there is/was a public memorial, but I didn't hear the details. I'd gathered that they weren't well--there was a mention on stage at the Albany festival that people should go visit--but not any details.

I bought a tape of Windstorm from Greg at the Toodyay Folk Festival in about 1985 - possibly off a table on the verandah at one of the pubs. I played that tape until it ceased to function. Somewhen around 2005, I ended up chatting with Greg at the Fairbridge Folk Festival, and asked whether or not it was available for purchase. They were apologetic, but made noises about still having the master tape. And some time after that, I acquired the CD (probably also at Fairbridge, and the Festival tent). It is still one of my favourite albums.

Other people might remember Greg from Jenny's Place*, where I remember them as a regular. Also, I think, a sometimes member of the Mucky Duck bush band (although my memory could be faulty in either direction, such that was an always member, or was never a member and I have conflated two musicians). Greg also did kids shows - while our kids were in daycare, there was some kind of summer family picnic with Greg as the entertainer.

I was going to link my favourite song here, but I'm not finding it on any of the usual locations.

* folk music venue. I don't remember if it were weekly or monthly; we went intermittently. It was some kind of room around the back of the eponymous Jenny's house; large enough for a reasonable side friendly audience and a bit of space for performers. I was going in the 80s; I have no feel for how long it was running.

Wow, I hate this.

Today I just realized that All in the Family ISN'T just plain invisible or "Error 404" when people reach it. People see the takedown notice and since I very obviously don't do photorealistic art, kinda the only conclusion to draw is that my work is "Content glorifying sexual violence" or "minors, minor-presenting, or suggested minors in a sexual context."

This is incredibly degrading. This might be more humiliating than getting shadowbanned from Gumroad for Cultiples, and that was pretty damn crummy.

I make mental health work about sexual trauma. It's bad for business to have "minors in a sexual context" as code for "child pornography" anywhere near me professionally, even if you ignore that this is, again, a memoir about how incest fucked me up. The whole point is that it's awful! Josie Riesman called it "one of the most brutal and engaging comics I’ve ever read." Tarun Athmika did a whole fucking paper on the politics of implication in (among other things) All in the Family, and how bans of discussion of oppression supports that oppression! Holy shit, he couldn't have been more prescient had he tried!

I've still heard nothing from itch.io. I ordered my payout a week ago and it's still "in review." I don't know if I'm going to get paid. The idea that I might get pedojacketed, AGAIN, for totally nonsense reasons is...

I don't know what it is.

This never used to happen to me until 2023, and now it's becoming normal to me. This is just life to me now. And I feel stupidly naive that it took this long to happen; it feels like it was always going to.

At least I can take comfort that the Banned Book Sale is going well. But god, I would've way rathered never throwing one.

Heads up, y'all; on account of having my psychological murder memoir banned as child pornography, I am throwing a Banned Book Sale to help compensate for the loss! Enjoy! And now for the usual poll announcement:

Hey everybody, it's that time again: time to vote for which stuff gets the LiberaPay/Patreon money this month!

As always, anyone can vote (please do!), but LiberaPay and Patreon patrons get double weight for their votes.  (Due to Patreon's porn purges, I really encourage you to use LiberaPay, if you get a choice.) If you want to see the blurbs for any of these works, those are here!  (You can also leave your requests there; requesting a story or essay is always free!) If you don't have a DW and so can't do the poll, that's okay; just leave your vote in the comments below; anon comments are turned on.

The Hands of a Dozen Strangers: My Experience at a Compassionate Touch Workshop
Summary: “Loving, consensual touch can be a deliberate religious practice.” —Christine Hoff Kraemer, Eros and Touch from a Pagan Perspective, pg. 122.
Series: Essay
Word Count: 2700
Notes: Winner of the LiberaPay/Patreon fan poll! A lot of these ideas I originally got from Eros and Touch from a Pagan Perspective, especially chapters 1: “Divided for Love’s Sake: An Erotic Cosmology” and 4: “the Sacrament of Touch.” The author has generously uploaded it to archive.org; check it out!

Unsurprisingly to anyone familiar with my history, I (Rogan of LB) have trouble being physically close to people. So what was I doing going to a compassionate touch workshop in a mysterious half-renovated warehouse with a dozen strangers, most of them men? Well, I wanted a change. I wanted to change.

Thank you again to everyone who's contributed to the Banned Book Sale; I didn't expect the response and am deeply grateful. I've sold like a dozen books in a week, which is super-unusual for me. Thank you!

Until I hash things out with itch.io (no response yet), you can buy the AllFam ebook (and the script version) on Payhip. I am slowly uploading all my ebooks there, starting with the stuff most likely to be banned. I have everything copied over now except for the Megapack which is... by far the largest and may take a bit.

EDIT: okay, Megapack should be up now too. Whew.

Guess who won a chest X-ray, a nebulizer treatment, and will be picking up antibiotics, steroids, and prescription cough syrup? So fun.

The chest X-ray was totally fine, yay. And some of the rattling cough, congestion, and face pain are definitely due to a building sinus infection.

Damn, it's been a while since I updated. We went to San Francisco for the 2nd MCR show, and it was as fantastic as the first. There were some minor tweaks done to the non-music parts of the performance, and from what I hear more minor tweaks were done for the two L.A shows. Gerard Way is indeed living his best theatre kid life.

The SF "stage B" performance (when they perform non- Black Parade songs) wasn't as meaningful for me as the Seattle one. They didn't play "Thank You for the Venom" or "Vampires Will Never Hurt You", sigh. To the delight of others in the crowd, they covered "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" by Smashing Pumpkins. I say "to the delight of others" because I am a Seattle Old and Have Opinions about Smashing Pumpkins. (Not as bad as my opinions about Courtney Love, but I still Have Opinions.)

We also got to hang out with friends while in SF, one of whom was celebrating her 50th, yay! And we made a pilgrimage to Borderlands Books, where I foolishly looked in the rare books cabinet and then spent money on a first edition of The Vinegar Works, a three book box set of Edward Gorey books. (While I was dithering the Stroppy One said, "Will you regret not buying it?", which made it clear it needed to be mine.)

I brought a rotten cold home from SF; It's been slightly over a week and there's a crackling sensation when I breathe, so I'm headed to a clinic later today to (probably) get a z-pack and steroids.

OH MY GOD THE TEASER FOR S3 OF INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE THE VAMPIRE LESTAT. Part of the teaser did confirm they're changing the name of the show, because the upcoming season focuses on my beloved egotistical vampire rock star boyfriend. Remember before the show premiered when I had concerns about Sam Reid playing Lestat, and how those concerns were blown to dust after episode one? Holy mother of god, Sam Reid has been possessed by the spirit of Lestat and I am frothing at the mouth about that teaser. I'm also stamping my feet in frustration because we have to wait until 2026 for the show omg I need it NOOOWWWWW.

So between MCR stuff and Lestat content, my Tumblr has been fannish incoherency. In L.A MCR played an unreleased song from the scrapped "Paper Kingdom" album. As I said over there, all I need now is for Hannibal S4 to be announced and my head really will explode.
